So, the folks finally left Tokyo to first vacation for a while in India before they move to Ho chi minh city , Vietnam. That leaves yours truely moving from the house to a dorm. The dorm aint bad. Its a small fully furnished studio . What the move means is that instead of a bed room and a study, bilbo has a small studio/kitchenette kinda outfit and instead of a 4 hobs /big oven range and sprawling kitchen , bilbo now tries cooking at one and a half hotplate and no counterspace :(
The first day saw no cooking in the apt. I bought a burger ( uggghh ) and practically inhaled it. I have now officially sworn off burgers. For dinner I warmed up stuff mom had left for me in the refrigerator ( bless her soul) . Next day , being friday was a working day. Since options for eating out are limited for me, I made lunch. Lunch here was some peas soaked and then boiled . I had those with some spices. Sounds weird but it actually turns out to be quite flavorful and healthy. No pics.
And now the first wkend. Got around to putting up some shelves to give my kitchen some semblance of sanity. Yes, stu
ff did fall down in the middle of the night , giving me a shock and breaking some crockery. And I did have starting hiccups cooking wise. Lunch, saturday was barely palatable. I was not brave enough to call it nice. But it did go down and remained down. Thank god for small mercies.
Coming to saturday dinner. Think comfort food. I really needed it. Was really missing my family by now and not really knowing any one in the dorm did not help. Not to mention the poor connectivity and the fact that I did not, by then, have a number I could call my folks at. So khichdi it was. Its a basic rice +lentil combo. I just throw in whatever veggies I have to make it a one pot meal . I also use tuvar dal which is not exactly a khitchdi lentil. Thankfully that turned out well . And I
could call it my first semi decent meal.
Sunday I woke up really late and made a sunshine omelette. I think I had tried to make an omelette before and as expected ( with my luck ) the eggs kinda floated on the surface of the pan instead of sticking to the bottom. That was an unqualified disaster. Thankfully this omelette did not follow that one and actually turned out pretty decent. Wkends I usually get up late and combine a very late bfast with lunch, making my first bite at arounf 2 -3 in the afternoon. Call it a very late brunch .
Dinner, Sunday, was thankfully not
by me. Met up some friends who bought me dinner at a really nice salad bar. I seem to have had a late thanksgiving :)
Next wk saw me taking basic tomato and cheese sandwiches on whole wheat bread for lunch. No pics as I assembled those minutes before I walked out the door.
Dinners however have been nice so far. Not really relaxed cooking , but more like "quick , throw some thing in the pot, I am starving" kinds. I've made rice with scallions and tuna in a tomato sauce. Quick easy and really tasty.
And then I've had veggie stirfries with sprouted moong dal. So far really simple stuff and no fancy culinary experiments, but hey, its keeping me breathing :)
Oh , I forgot to mention my peeler. Bought one which refused to work properly. Aaaarrgh. Finally bought another one which thankfully works really beautifully. Can't really help showing off , now, Can I ?
So yeah, I guess I am finally back to my cooking. As I did mention to a few friends earlier, the blog would have a chan
ge of pace and the kind of cooking would change too. Earlier I was making desserts as mom made the main dishes and my cooking was more experimental . Now its going to be more survival cooking and stuff thrown together at the last moment. I do intend to do some experimental cooking as and when I get the time. It will be few and far in between but I already have a few things in mind. And its going to be more of a journal of what I have been eating as opposed to what I have been serving. I hope to enjoy this. Hopefully so will the few readers of this blog. Happy new year and here's to another new beginning :)
P.S the recipes might follow.
